The Sea Woman of South Korea

It has been hundred of years, the sea women (haenyeo) started to harvest their own seafood by using bare hand to catch them from the ocean floor. With no breathing equipment, they would hold their breath for about two minutes under the water. They would strap the lead weights around their waists to help them sink faster and wear the old-fashioned headlight-shaped scuba masks for diving. The orange baskets,which will flow on the sea water, in the picture are for them to collect the harvest.
In the first picture, one of the woman was actually singing before they dive in to catch their sea foods. They believed by singing, it will build up their spirit and it was a tradition for them to sing as well.
It was said that the sea woman would be gone in 20 years as no one would take up their roles. Also, by knowing that their ages were all above 40 years old and one of them was actually at the age of 80 ish, we could tell that they have maintain the health in a good state. They were the Korea's first working mother and represent female independence and strength in Korea.
