When the Habsburgs took over the area in 1335, they demolished the fortress of the Spanheim family . Only in the the second half of the 15th century they started to build a new which is the one we see today. It main purpose was to defend against Turkish invasion, which happened in the 15th and 16th century.
The castle was acted as a function of a military hospital and an arsenal in the 17th and 18th century. The war with Habsburgs broke out when brought freedom to the citizen of Ljubjana in 1809. During this war the Pipers tower was removed and a new wooden took over on the place of today's stone one.
The Habsburgs used the castle for jails, after the French had left. The jail period lasted until the end of the Second World War. Till in the 70s the castle was in a terrible condition. Renovation
took place and today the castle is a popular tourist destination.
