In 1600, Venice's prisons for common criminals were being moved from the Doge's Palace to a building across a narrow canal from the Palace. Antonio Contino was responsible of the architect.

At first, the young Contino came up with a idea perhaps having a nicer prison passage the world has ever known. Soon, " Bridge of Sighs. " was created Lord Byron who came to Venice on their Grand Tours. In popular folklore, it comes from the sighs of prisoners condemned to life sentences in the new prison as they took their last view of Venice from the window of the Bridge.

On the other hand, there is a saying that if you kiss someone beneath the Bridge at sunset ( provided you are doing on a gondola) you will love each other forever.
