Postojna Cave

Francis I, the first Emperor of the Austria - Hungary, accidentally discovered a new area of the cave , when Francis l was being prepared for a visit in 1818. It officially become a tourist destination in 1819. Electric lighting was added in 1884, further enhancing the cave.

In 1872, cave rails were installed for the tourists. At first, the tourist have to pushed themselves along by the guide. Only at the beginning of 20th century a gas locomotive was introduced.

During World War ll, German used the caves to store almost 1000 barrels of aircraft fuels, which were destroyed in April

by Slovene Partisans. In results a large section of the cave was destroyed and blackening the entrance.

After 1945, the gas locomotive was replaced by an electric one. About 5.3 kilometers (3.3 mi) of the cave system are open to the public.
